About PHM-SA

Globally PHM (www.phmovement.org) was established in 2000 following the People’s Health Assembly in Bangladesh and was established as:

a large global civil society network of health activists
a supportive of the WHO policy of Health for All
an organised force to combat the root causes of the deepening inequalities in global health
& to revitalise the implementation of WHO’s strategy of Primary Health Care
to advocate for The People's Charter for Health

To identify and work with key health specific campaign issues e.g. HIV/AIDS as well as issues impacting on health e.g. basic services.

To provide a forum for networking and mobilizing around key issues e.g. health human resource crisis
To mobilize progressive health professionals into advocating for the Primary Health Care approach
To increase information flow and knowledge on global and local issues impacting on health.
To participate in and comment critically on health policies

People’s Health Assemblies in Bangladesh in 2000 and Ecuador in 2005
Million signature campaign; “HEALTH NOW – no to War, No to WTO”; Women’s sexual and reproductive rights
Initiated the Global Health Watch (an alternative world health report), with Global Equity Gauge Alliance and Medact

Membership > 400 with a growing email list, incl. academics, activists, trade unions, NGOs, CHWs, social movements
Critical Health Perspectives, a 2 monthly publication aimed at generating debates
Responding and ongoing engagement with Draft Health Charter
Co-initiated the regional Health Civil Society Network;
Engagement with the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health civil society processes
In the process of developing a PHM-SA website
Right to Health campaign is being planned in South Africa as part of the Global campaign
